Throughout the Bible there is a reference to “the multitudes.” This reference is predominant in Jesus’ sermons. In our modern contemporary mindset, it’s easy to view the 12 disciples as “rock stars” because we know their names, their backgrounds, and how they interacted with Jesus. We had insight into their personalities and their humanity. However, for all the detail and development of the 12, the largely faceless and nameless referred to as “the multitude” were as, perhaps more important than the disciples themselves. While the disciples were frequently referred to by name as followers of Jesus and had the honor of being referred to as “His disciples,” the multitude were largely referenced as lost sheep in need of a shepherd. The multitude in the Bible ARE important and not back-up cast members in a show about the Jesus Christ and His disciples. Today, WE are all part of the multitude, that nameless faceless entourage in need of a shepherd. Sure, like in the ancient times when Jesus was physically on the Earth, the multitude was made up of people from ALL walks of life: young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, and so on. This is true today! As stated in Isaiah 53:6 in the Holy Bible, “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Just like the multitude of the Bible, they be us (poor grammar but true). So, please, just because we have cars, planes, and buses rather than donkeys and chariots, iPhones rather than scrolls, and other “modern” things, we all are born sinners in need of a Savior: Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. Amen 🙏🏾
